What Is Green Tripe & Why Is It So Good For My Pet?

So what is Green Tripe?

Green tripe is the unwashed stomach of a ruminant animal that contains partially digested food.

It is often brown, green, or grey in colour. The colour depends on what the ruminant has been eating.

Ruminants such as cows, sheep, goats & deer are herbivores which means they eat plant matter. Herbivores have the digestive enzymes required to properly breakdown copious amounts of plant matter (such as grass and hay), therefore the stomach contents remaining in green tripe will be in a pre-digested form by the time a dog (or cat) eats it.

Green tripe contains endless digestive enzymes, amino acids, good bacteria and is beneficial for our cats and dogs, giving them a boost to their digestive system which, in turn, improves their immune system. Although it does have a ‘barnyard’ smell, it is irresistible to our pets

The name ‘Green’ refers to it being unprocessed.

Why is Green Tripe So Good For My Pet?

Protein

Green Tripe is high in protein.

Protein is made up of hundreds or thousands of amino acids that perform essential functions in your pet’s body, including building muscle and enhancing all system functioning from immune response to tissue repair to urinary tract health.

  • Amino Acid Leucine promotes muscle recovery and repair after activity
  • Amino Acid Proline supports the production of cartilage and heals wounds
  • Amino Acid Aspartic acid which boosts antibody production

Probiotics

One of the best components of raw green tripe is lactobacillus acidophilus. It’s one of the intestinal bacteria that help protect your pet’s digestive tract, keeping unwanted bacteria such as e-coli, salmonella, and listeria from overpopulating and causing health problems.

Raw Green Tripe contains high amounts of lactobacillus acidophilus. By including green tripe in your pet’s diet, you increase the amount of good bacteria that lives within your pet’s digestive system, promoting healthy digestion and optimal nutrient absorption.

Enzymes

Raw Green Tripe contains digestive enzymes. Why does this matter? Natural enzymes aid the digestive process by facilitating the breakdown of food into nutrients. The more digestive enzymes available, the more vitamins, minerals, and usable energy your pet will be able to receive from food.

Natural Vitamins and Minerals

Because the ruminant has partially digested its food the stomach is packed with vitamins and minerals

  • Calcium 78.0mg
  • Iron 0.8mg
  • Magnesium 14.7mg
  • Phosphorous 75.3mg
  • Potassium 75.7mg
  • Zinc 1.6mg
  • Copper 0,1mg
  • Manganese 0.1mg
  • Selenium 14.1 mg

But what about added vitamins and minerals? True, processed foods do include vitamins and minerals, even naturally-derived ones, but studies still show that consuming natural food sources for these are more beneficial than eating them isolated in the form of added vitamins. Your pet’s body seems to absorb these naturally-occurring vitamins better.

Calcium and Phosphorus

Green Tripe has a nearly perfect calcium to phosphorus ratio, as well as an optimal ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fatty acids, making it nutritionally balanced. Green tripe is also acidic in pH, making it easier for your pet to digest – perfect for sensitive stomachs.

  • Calcium is essential for bone structure and controls muscle and nerve function.
  • Phosphorous – helps form bones and teeth, helps muscles, kidneys, and heart to function correctly.

Healthy Fats

Green Tripe is high in heart-healthy unsaturated fats, nearly 50% of the total fat in tripe is unsaturated. These fats provide quality, long-term energy, and increase healthy HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol.

  • What are the benefits of Green Tripe?
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Assists in building healthy muscle
  • Supports healthy skin and coat
  • Is low allergenic
  • Helps soothe gastrointestinal upsets
  • Maintains and supports healthy digestion

When Should I give Green Tripe to my Pet?

  • Should be taken when your dog or cat has been on antibiotics. Since antibiotics are trying to kill bacteria in your body, they also kill the good bacteria in your intestines that keep your digestive system in balance.
  • Your pet needs to gain weight whether it be from illness or has a hard time putting on weight. The weight gained will be a healthy weight, built on calories full of the vitamins, minerals, and nutrition that your cat or dog needs to restore and maintain proper system function.
  • Weight gain and loss? Many dogs and cats gain weight when fed traditional, carbohydrate-heavy, low-nutrition kibble diets that claim to be complete nutrition. Carbohydrates often provide quick energy, not lasting energy that will keep your pet satisfied, like proteins and healthy fats. Tripe contains concentrated calories, but the calories are full of nutrients as well that will support your pet’s system. Tripe makes a great supplement to any weight-loss diet for your dog or cat, as it will help them feel full. Your pet also won’t miss out on needed nutrients, as is the danger of restrictive diets.
  • Green tripe has a very potent aroma, which even the pickiest dogs seem to love. This is particularly good for seniors who have lost some of their sense of smell.
  • Tripe is chock full of vitamins, minerals, protein, and healthy fats, which makes it the perfect addition to your pregnant or nursing bitch’s/cat’s diet. Feeding her quality nutrition at this time in her life gives her the energy that she needs for her puppies/kittens, but won’t make her pack on non-essential pounds. The extra calcium it contains should suit your pregnant or nursing pet’s needs, and the nearly perfect ratio of calcium to phosphorus (which is required for calcium uptake) is highly desirable and rare in whole food.
  • Green tripe is very easy to digest. In fact, green tripe is partially digested already, since it comes from a grazing animal’s stomach. Freeze-dried, frozen, or fresh tripe is the best for naturally-occurring probiotics and digestive enzymes. If your dog or cat has “Leaky Gut” syndrome, raw tripe is very digestible and can ease these symptoms. If your pet vomits after a meal, it may help settle its stomach
  • Chunky cut green tripe has a quite rubbery texture, which is great for dogs and cats to chew on. This makes it a tasty, natural chew that is excellent for oral health. See here to purchase chunky green tripe
  • Can’t get your dog to stop eating poop? The digestive enzymes in green tripe are said to help dogs that eat feces for the digestive enzymes it contains. While there are a number of reasons why dogs eat poop, including anxiety, stress, and boredom (to name a few), this solution takes care of the dietary cause. Green tripe can also rid your dog of a habit of eating grass.

How can I add Green Tripe to My Pets Diet and how much?

  • If you feed your dog a raw diet you can add Green Tripe into their daily meal. The equation is 55% muscle meat, 25% Green Tripe, 10% bone & 10% organ.
  • If you feed half raw and half kibble then add it to your daily raw portion. (Feed the raw and kibble separately. If you mix dry and raw your dog might get wind and a rumbly tummy and possibly runny poops!). The raw part of the meal should consist of 55% muscle meat, 25% Green Tripe, 10% bone & 10% organ.
  • If you feed mainly a kibble based diet then you would feed it separately to the kibble as a treat or gut booster. Depending on the size of your dog you can feed 100g to 200g a day. It can be fed frozen or defrosted. We sell it in either a minced version or a chunky version. See above for our chunky and minced version.
  • You can also give your pet dehydrated green tripe which is not as good as the fresh green tripe but is nonetheless packed full of nutrients and is a great chew.
