We feed our dogs Tana & Monty the Prey Model Diet
What is the Prey Model Diet?
The Prey Model Diet (PMR) diet eliminates processed foods and provides cats and dogs with a natural diet that mimics what their ancestors and wild dogs eat.
To feed a Prey Model Diet you need to adhere to the correct ratios of muscle meat/edible bone and organ, which are..
We also advise that for a couple of days a week you would add lambs green tripe. When you add tripe you need to change the ratios to…
The Prey Model meat blends we sell are predominantly from the wilds of New Zealand so they as close to organic as you can get.
We feed Monty & Tana our wild caught game such as rabbit, possum, hare, turkey, wallaby, deer & goat etc. We do not feed Monty our farm meat range as he gets itchy when he eats them. Although there is the correct proportion of bone in our meat blend blocks, we also add a meaty bone to our boys’ diet once or twice a week. This way their jaws get a good workout and their teeth a good clean.
Does your dog get the itches?
If your dog gets the itches you might have to do an elimination diet. Remove all beef, chicken, grain and preservatives from your dogs diet. Feed only raw green tripe for a couple of days for a detox, then bring in a novel protein. A novel protein is a meat that your dog has not had before. Feed that new protein for about a week to two weeks, monitoring whether the itches have subsided or gone away. If they have, then you can add another novel protein to the diet and so on. It is important to give your dog as many different types of protein as possible as you do not want your dog to be a fussy eater. If that one protein is not available then you will have a problem on your hands.
What are the benefits of feeding The Prey Model Diet?
Healthier guts, whiter teeth with less tartar and increased energy are just some of the positive changes common in pets who switch to Prey Model feeding. After just a few weeks, owners tell us they have noticed an improvement in their pet’s health. After a few months, the benefits are incredible and can include:
- No more allergies (allergies are often caused by the cereals and preservatives contained within kibble).
- Increased mental stimulation, not least because the pet is required to figure out how to attack and consume their new foods.
- Smaller and less smelly poops. Meat and bone are broken down in the acidic stomach of cats and dogs more easily than kibble (which requires a more alkaline stomach).
- More excitement at mealtimes (we all look forward to dinner time when there’s something special to eat!)
- Stronger immune systems that are more resistant to disease and ill health.
- Shiny, healthier coats.
- Pearly white teeth, healthy gums and sweet breath (no tooth decay, or periodontal disease, therefore no infection on the gums and no bacteria swallowed with every gulp of saliva).
- The increase in oral hygiene also leads to reduced chances of heart, kidney and liver disease.
- Better concentration with commands (dogs – cats will still do what they please!) due to being less hyperactive.
- Better muscle tone and body fat balance.
- Less visits to the vet
So how much I feed my dog?
Puppies up to 18 months should get approximately 40g of Prey Model Diet per 1Kg of body weight.
Over 18 months the ratio changes to 20g Of Prey Model Diet to 1Kg of body weight.
– Tana is 18 months old now weighs 20Kg, so he gets 20g per 1Kg of body weight. So that is 20Kg x 20g = 400g total per day
– Monty (Shih Tzu) is 7 years old and weighs 10Kg, so he also gets 20g per 1kg of body weight. So that is 10Kg x 20g = 200g total per day
If you feed twice a day then you would feed half the amount in the morning and half in the afternoon. Some of our customers feed a mixture of raw and dry., however, we suggest you keep them separate. One meal raw and the other meal dry.
What do vets think about feeding a raw diet?
As long as you tell them that the diet you are feeding your dog is balanced with the correct ratios then they will be fine. If you are feeding just meat then it is not balanced and will be missing vital vitamins and minerals. They will have seen very unwell pets that have been fed a diet of pure meat and that is why they need to know that you are feeding a balanced raw meat diet.
Monty has been on a balanced raw diet all of his life. He has only been to the vet a handful of times. The vet told me that dogs his size usually get their anal glands cleared a couple of times a year. Monty has only every had his glands done once.
